WTTW Channel 11 - Sneak Previews - "Superman, Force 10 and More" (Complete Broadcast, 12/28/1978) 📺

Here's a (prit' near) complete edition of Sneak Previews on WTTW Channel 11, the program which marked the birth of the legendary duo of Gene Siskel of the Chicago Tribune (and WBBM Channel 2) and Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times. Notice that instead of the 'thumbs up' or 'thumbs down' of later years, they had an encapsulated 'YES' or 'NO' for each film towards the end of the program. (Only the 'From WTTW Chicago' animation and the first few seconds of the opening titles are missing.) The films reviewed on this edition (in order of appearance) are: - "Oliver's Story" with Ryan O'Neal and Candice Bergen (the follow-up to "Love Story"): Gene considers it "a lightweight soap opera...a soft fuzzy-wuzzy romance," Roger notes that Ryan is "on the edge of tears" through the whole picture and considers it a "bad sincere remake" (both NO's) - "King of the Gypsies," a look at American gypsy life with Eric Roberts (Julia's brother), Sterling Hayden, Shelley Winters and Susan Sarandon: Roger enjoyed it; Gene also did, but wanted to read the book and thought the film too soft in comparison (both YES's) - "Force 10 From Navarone" with Robert Shaw, Edward Fox and Harrison Ford: Gene says you've seen this type of movie before ("an old-fashioned, soft, romantic war film"), Roger notes about Shaw's recent death and the ending scene where the dam bursts (both NO's) - "Moment By Moment" with John Travolta and Lily Tomlin: Roger hated it ("It's not just a bad film, it's a disaster"), while Gene agrees, speaking as a Travolta fan from "Saturday Night Fever"; both blame the film's writer (and Ms. Tomlin's manager), Jane Wagner (both NO's) - "Superman" with Christopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman: Gene opines the film lives up to all its hype, thinks its love scenes make it, and finds Mr. Reeve so believable you'd forget his "ridiculous" costume; Roger was surprised that, for all what was spent on the film, it displayed a sense of humor and was "one of the year's most refreshing comedies"; Gene takes issue with the non-flying special effects (both YES's) Gene ends the program with previews of reviews for "California Suite," "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and "Every Which Way But Loose" on the next edition. Ending credits (with voiceover promo for Image Union by ??): Sneak Previews with Gene Siskel & Roger Ebert Producer - Thea Flaum Associate Producer - Ray Solley Scenic Designer - Michael Loewenstein Assistant Director - Judy Cole Director - Patterson Denny A Production of WTTW / Chicago (C) 1978 Chicago Educational Television Association (tape cuts out before funding info and animated PBS ID) "Until then, from Roger and me, 'Season's Screenings' everyone..." This aired on local Chicago TV on Thursday, December 28th 1978 during the 7:00pm to 7:30pm timeframe. About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television: The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,700+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at: http://www.fuzzymemories.tv/index.php...
