These missiles travel at a terminal hypersonic speed of 2,100–2,600 meters per second (Mach 6.2–Mach 7.6) and can reach an altitude of 50 kilometers (31 miles) with a range of up to 500 kilometers (310 miles). The Iskander-M systems were intended to replace the supposedly obsolete OTR-21 Tochka systems in the Russian military by 2020. The Iskander can be equipped with several types of conventional warheads, including cluster munitions, a fuel–air explosive enhanced-blast warhead, a high-explosive fragmentation warhead, an earth penetrator for bunker busting, and an electromagnetic pulse device for anti-radar missions. Additionally, the missile can carry nuclear warheads. Design The Iskander ballistic missile system is an advanced replacement for the Oka, featuring two solid-propellant, single-stage guided missiles (model 9M723K1) with inseparable warheads. Each missile can be independently targeted quickly, and the mobile launch platform is difficult to prevent from launching. Targets can be identified by satellites, aircraft, intelligence centers, artillery observers, or aerial photos. The Iskander-M's missiles can be re-targeted during flight and have optically guided warheads controlled by encrypted radio transmission. They use an electro-optical guidance system for self-homing, and their thrust vector control is achieved with graphite vanes. The missile follows a quasi-ballistic path, performs evasive maneuvers, and releases decoys to evade defenses, staying within the atmosphere. The Iskander-M travels at hypersonic speeds of 2,100–2,600 meters per second (Mach 6–7), reaches an altitude of 50 kilometers , weighs 4,615 kilograms , carries a 710–800 kilograms warhead, has a range of 500 kilometers, and a CEP of 5–7 meters. It can carry conventional or nuclear warheads and is designed for tactical use in theater-level conflicts against various targets. In 2007, the R-500 cruise missile was tested with a range of up to 2,000 kilometers. The Iskander-M system is being delivered to the military with both cruise and ballistic missiles, and can now strike static sea targets. MAZ supplies the chassis for the launchers, and the system can be transported by various vehicles, including airplanes. The nuclear warhead yield is estimated to be between 5 to 50 kilotonnes of TNT.
