Imtiaz Ali on Chamkila, Jab We Met: Shahid & Kareena broke up two days before the shoot was wrapped

Imtiaz Ali's Chamkila starting Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra as Amar Singh Chamkila and Amarjyot Kaur has received a thunderous applause from critics and audiences alike. In this success interview with Galatta India, the filmmaker discusses how he navigated through different chapters of Chamkila's life. He also tells our host Nayandeep Rakshit how Diljit reacted when he had called him for the first time cast him. "He thought I was going to sue him for making Jodi that is also loosely inspired from Chamkila's life," he laughs. Imtiaz's films have always had Punjab as a character and this time, he hits a home run, after two back to back debacles. Does that change a thing? The filmmaker answers positive. Not just that, looking back at his own films, Imtiaz speaks about the whole casting process of Jab We Met and shares that JWM was possibly the most "rejected" film of his career where actors, producers, exhibitors nobody believed in the project. In fact, he also revealed that Bobby Deol and Kareena Kapoor were his first choices but eventually, Kareena had to move on, and the plan was to cast Preity Zinta opposite Bobby and that also fell through. Imtiaz shares how the Shahid Kapoor and Kareena casting happened, and why their break-up didn't affect the film's process at all. Along with this, Imtiaz also analyses his other film Tamasha starring Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone and accepts that it was more of a marketing failure than a content failure for the film. "People thought of Tamasha as a romantic film where it was more than just that," he accepts as he also admits that viral Instagram analysis post about Agar Tum Saath Ho is also his brainchild. An Instagram cinemaphile pointed out how Deepika adorns red and Ranbir wears grey in Agar Tum Saath Ho, indicating the fight between the heart and the mind. All this and more, in this interview.
