Standedge Tunnel Huddersfield- "Britain's longest, deepest and highest canal tunnel."

Another one of the "Original Seven wonders of the waterways" A popular video circulating online highlights the Standedge Tunnel as one of the remarkable feats along waterways. The Standedge Tunnels consist of four tunnels running parallel through the Pennine hills, connecting Marsden in Kirklees, West Yorkshire, and Diggle in Oldham, Greater Manchester, in northern England. Among these, three serve as railway tunnels for the Huddersfield line, while the fourth functions as a canal tunnel. Originally situated entirely within the West Riding of Yorkshire, boundary changes in 1974 altered its administrative jurisdiction. Authorized by Parliament on April 4, 1794, construction of the canal tunnel along the Huddersfield Narrow Canal commenced shortly thereafter, covering a distance of 5,451 yards (4,984 meters). However, various challenges, including unexpected water levels and difficulties in securing skilled labor, prolonged the project beyond its initial estimates. Benjamin Outram even withdrew from the endeavor due to these challenges. In 1807, Thomas Telford devised a new plan to complete the tunnel, which finally opened in 1811. Remarkably, it stands as the longest and oldest among the Standedge tunnels, as well as the longest, highest, and deepest canal tunnel in the United Kingdom. Although closed to traffic in 1943, the canal tunnel was eventually reopened in May 2001.
