However, it was the second Car of the Year and the largest front-wheel-drive car in the British motor industry at the time. The oldest surviving example of the Austin 1800 is a pre-production model built in 1963 and registered in 1964. The car was initially intended to be a replacement for the Austin A60 Cambridge/Morris Oxford, but it was eventually launched as an additional model with a 1.8-litre engine. The Austin 1800 faced challenges in terms of its appearance and was often compared to more conventional cars like the Ford Corsair and the Singer Vogue. Owners also complained about the car's tendency to burn oil, awkward driving position, and lack of power steering. Despite these challenges, the Austin 1800 was praised for its road holding, comfort, and handling qualities. Production of the Austin 1800 ended after six years and 386,811 units were produced.
