From 1883-1888 the borax mine in Death Valley was 165 miles from the nearest railroad in Mojave, California. The Southern Pacific had finally come close enough to the most remote desert in the country so that hauling borax became affordable. It was still a 10 day trip both ways and the method of hauling borax through the desert was with giant wagons, 20 mules and 2 men. This is the story of how the legendary teams worked to get the borax from the remote mine to the markets of the world. It would be years later when the company founded by Francis Marion Smith, Pacific Coast Borax, would create 20 Mule Team Borax as a brand name. But the idea for that brand came from the 20 Mule Teams that hauled through hell.
