Platform (Heels) and Pitfalls | Brett Ries | TEDxDuke

NOTE FROM TED: This talk represents the speaker's personal political views. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: http://storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t... How did a small-town farm boy from South Dakota become an award-winning LGBTQ+ activist and drag queen at a top 5 law school? Brett Ries (a.k.a. Vinny Vidi Vici) shares his journey of self-acceptance while pursuing his legal and political careers. At bottom, Brett's story highlights that identities can sometimes serve as the best platforms for change, and, as such, one should not (and need not) sacrifice their identity for their career. Brett Ries (a.k.a. Vinny Vidi Vici) was born in Watertown, South Dakota, and grew up loving theatre and activism. While attending the University of South Dakota for undergrad, Brett could be seen on the theatrical and political stages: he starred in several theatrical productions and, at the age of 21, ran for the South Dakota House of Representatives, a campaign that was featured on CNN. Brett has continued his interest in theatre and activism while attending law school at Duke University: his paper on LGBTQ+ discrimination in jury trials placed runner-up in a national writing competition and will be published this spring, and he began performing in drag as Vinny Vidi Vici. His legal, political, and theatrical backgrounds give him a unique way to advocate for the LGBTQ+ community. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
