A DAY IN THE WESTERN PACIFIC ABOARD USS ORISKANY CV-34 U.S. NAVY FILM 81104

Presented by the Pacific Fleet Combat Camera Group, A Day In Westpac is a Vietnam War era film that gives viewers an overview of a typical day aboard the USS Oriskany in the Western Pacific. The film looks at members of the Navy performing routine operations and maintenance on the ship, as well as some other aspects of life on the “floating city.” The film opens with a shot of the Oriskany sailing on the Tonkin Gulf with the Seventh Fleet (00:30). A sailor wakes up and gets ready for call to revelry (01:04). Another sailor charts the ship’s navigation (02:21). Men prepare for flight operations as flight deck crews ready the deck (02:58). A helicopter is moved into position for takeoff and Navy planes are positioned and loaded with ordinance (03:44). Pilots are briefed in the “ready room” for the day’s mission (04:58). A pilot puts on his gear (05:24) then heads to his plane to run through his flight checks. A standby rescue helicopter fires up its engine (06:42), then it takes off from the carrier. On the flight deck, aircraft prep for takeoff (07:22); jets are moved into position on the runway then take off—footage shows a reconnaissance plane and combat aircraft (A-7 Corsair IIs and what appears to be F-8 Crusaders) take off from the carrier. Below the flight deck is the “city” (09:40), which features a printing press, barber shop, recording facility, post office, medical lab, and a radio broadcasting studio. Men prepare bombs (12:26), which are then lifted to the flight deck and loaded onto aircraft. Corsair IIs fly in the air (13:11), performing maneuvers. The film gives an aerial view of the Oriskany (13:53). Men perform routine maintenance of the ship and aircraft, while in the sky, the ship’s planes meet with a tanker to refuel. Jets fly in formation over the ship (15:30). The film then gives viewers footage of a jet landing from the perspective of the jet (15:47). More jets land on the USS Oriskany, then the helicopter sets down on the deck (17:37). A jet is lowered below the flight deck (17:55). Cargo is moved between the Oriskany and another ship using cables (18:48); forklifts put the cargo away once it is unloaded on the carrier. The film concludes with a shot of the Oriskany between two other ships transporting cargo (20:17). The USS Oriskany (CV/CVA-34), nicknamed Mighty O and occasionally referred to as the O-boat, was one of the few Essex-class aircraft carriers completed after World War II for the United States Navy. The ship was named for the Battle of Oriskany during the Revolutionary War.
