Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Stage 5 is the most advanced form of kidney disease, where the kidneys have lost nearly all of their ability to function. Causes include diabetes, high blood pressure, glomerulonephritis, and polycystic kidney disease. Symptoms often include severe fatigue, fluid retention, shortness of breath, and confusion due to the buildup of waste products in the blood. Diagnosis is based on blood tests showing very low kidney function (GFR) and urine tests indicating poor waste removal. Treatment options are limited to dialysis, which performs some of the kidney's functions artificially, or a kidney transplant, which replaces the failed kidneys with a healthy donor kidney. Kidney transplant surgery involves replacing the damaged kidneys with a healthy kidney from a donor, which can be a living or a deceased donor. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision in the lower abdomen and places the new kidney in the pelvis, connecting it to the patient's blood vessels and bladder. Unlike other transplants, the patient's diseased kidneys are typically left in place unless they cause complications. Post-surgery, patients stay in the hospital for a few days to monitor kidney function and ensure there are no complications, such as rejection or infection. Long-term success requires taking immunosuppressive drugs to prevent the body from rejecting the new kidney and regular follow-up visits to monitor the kidney's function and overall health.
