Rh incompatibility arises when the mother is Rh negative & she carries Rh positive baby. The Rh antigen is present in rhesus monkeys also. The Rh antigen is discovered by Landsteiner & Weiner. The genetic locus of Rh antigen is present on the short arm of chromosome no 1. There are 5 major Rh antigens - C,c,E,e,D The fetus will be Rh positive or negative it all depends on the genotype of the father. A homozygous father will have all fetuses positive and heterozygous will have 50% positive or 50% negative. If both the parents are Rh negative then no incompatibility arises, as the fetus will also be Rh negative.
