A Week Surfing in Popoyo Nearly Ends in Disaster | Nicaragua

#Popoyosurf #Nicaragua #Travel Popoyo is a small surf town on the West Pacific Coast of Nicaragua (Rivas Department). Famous amongst surf travellers as a more remote, relaxing destination with multiple surf breaks, we decided to spend a week there. We stayed at a place called Suyo, with small thatch roof cabañas mere meters from the beach, playa Popoyo. There aren't many restaurants or shops in the area so it's worthwhile stopping off at a supermarket near Rivas before heading on the dusty roads to Popoyo. The main attraction of Popoyo is the surf. The main reef at Playa Sardinas is best surfed mid to high tide due to the rocky bottom and be prepared for strong currents - it's a constant paddle to stay near the peak. It goes both right and left, although when we were there it was mainly a left. The main reef isn't the only spot in the area. You can take a boat to surf the exclusive Playa Colorados or Panga Drops in Hacienda Iguana, or venture North to Lance's Left. Further out from the main reef and overlooked by the bar at Finca Popoyo is the Popoyo Outer Reef. Substantially bigger than the main reef and holding waves in the triple overhead range, it's an intimidating place! You can paddle along the channel without much fear of getting caught by a set (which is what I did), from which you can watch the hellmen charge. In between Playa Popoyo and Playa Sardinas is a more sheltered beginner's surf spot, breaking off the rocky outcrop beneath Magnific Rock restaurant. We rented a dirt bike for $20 USD a day which is absolutely worth it, giving you the freedom to explore the area. North of Playa Sardinas is a German bakery called Todo Con Amor which you have to visit to stock up on pretzels, sourdough bread, donuts and cake. If you're into skateboarding, there's an amazing mini ramp at Buena Onda, about 200m from Hotel Suyo. It's right on the beach and a great place for a sunset skate when the surfing isn't an option. Popoyo is a great place if you want a less travelled destination with incredible surf!
