Sun Ra Saturn Records at Princeton Record Exchange March, 2012

Just arrived; around 40 original Sun Ra LPs! Sun Ra is one of our favorite musicians here at Prex, so it is with pleasure that we announce this unique collection. For those we are unfamiliar with this iconic jazz master, a little background. Herman Blount, a.k.a. Sun Ra was either born in Alabama in 1914 or the planet Saturn depending on your source. For over 30 years, he travelled the spaceways with his Solar Myth Arkestra and graced us with almost uncountable recordings covering every aspect of jazz. He incorporated ragtime, swing, blues, be bop, avant-garde in a magnificent fashion and was an early pioneer of free improv and electronic keyboards. Dozens, if not hundreds, of jazz musicians were part of the Arkestra over the years including long-time stalwart saxophonists Pat Patrick, John Gilmore and Marshall Allen, and the ethereal-voiced June Tyson. They were based in Chicago in the 40's and 50's, NYC in the 60's, and Philly from the late 60's through his death in 1993. From the NY period on, the group lived communally, relentlessly experimenting. Their records were on many different labels through the years, but it is their own company, Saturn Records, that produced the bulk of their work. They sold these records themselves at local stores and shows and spent much of their time handcrafting the labels and covers. These "homemade" records are unique artifacts from the band and in this collection we have 30 of them! Most are from the late 70's and early 80's, but there are also a few from the NY 60's period. The condition of these LP is for the most part very good. Do be aware that given the non-professional nature of their company, the pressings themselves often have issues of background noise, dimples, etc. Due to the scarce nature of these titles, the prices are not cheap. We have tried to be fair and believe we have made them somewhat below market value. These records are not for everyone, but if you are searching for such things, you know how scarce they are. We encourage you to visit us soon! For those of you who are unfamiliar with us, please note that we are a bricks-and-mortar walk-in store only. Sorry, we do not ship.
