Day By Day | Songs and Everlasting Joy

This hymn was written by Carolina Sandell Berg after the death of her father. It was an outpouring of grief and also of consolation that the Lord could be with her day by day. In every moment, every circumstance, every tribulation, every trial, the Lord has promised you strength to meet them. “As your days, your strength shall be in measure.” No more, no less than you need to meet each moment. He promises you not only strength, but protection, peace, rest, mercy, lifting of burdens, cheer. This upholding of you, His child, is a charge He laid upon Himself and one He takes seriously. Each day, each moment, is only there for a short while. Take them from His hand, the hand of your kind, loving and protective Father. Trust what He’s given you before, what He’s giving you now. He’s kind beyond all measure, He offers you unlimited promises that you only have to grasp in faith. He offers you help when it’s all too much. He’s made this pledge to you. And He will continue it until you reach the Promised Land. Day by day. Day by Day Verse 1 Day by day, and with each passing moment, Strength I find to meet my trials here; Trusting in my Father’s wise bestowment, I’ve no cause for worry or for fear. He, whose heart is kind beyond all measure, Gives unto each day what He deems best, Lovingly its part of pain and pleasure, Mingling toil with peace and rest. Verse 2 Every day the Lord Himself is near me, With a special mercy for each hour; All my cares He fain would bear and cheer me, He whose name is Counsellor and Power. The protection of His child and treasure Is a charge that on Himself He laid; “As thy days, thy strength shall be in measure,” This the pledge to me He made. Verse 3 Help me then, in every tribulation, So to trust Thy promises, O Lord, That I lose not faith’s sweet consolation, Offered me within Thy holy Word. Help me, Lord, when toil and trouble meeting, E’er to take, as from a father’s hand, One by one, the days, the moments fleeting, Till I reach the promised land.
