Learn how to Bind a Quilt by Machine or hand sewing

Learning how to Bind a quilt can be the trickiest part for many people! I am here to help make the quilt binding process as easy & painless as possible for you. Learn how to get even quilt binding with crisp corners with this tutorial for sewing binding on by machine. For the full blog tutorials, check out these posts: Part 1: Prepping Your Quilt for Binding https://homemadeemilyjane.com/quilt-b... Part 2: Machine Sewing https://homemadeemilyjane.com/quilt-b... Before you get started with the binding, you first have to prepare your quilt. I “square up” my quilt by trimming off the excess batting and backing, and tug it as needed to make the lines as straight as possible. (Sometimes shift happens during the quilting process, the more square your corners are, and the more straight your edges are, the easier it will be to sew on the binding!) Once the quilt is trimmed, I sew around all 4 edges close to the edge. If you have a serger or overlock machine, this is a really great opportunity to use it! The way I first learned from my grandma is the hand binding method. It involved sewing the binding down to your quilt with a machine but then flipping it over and sewing little invisible stitches. Another method is machine quilt binding where you skip the hand sewing and instead use your machine to sew down both sides of the binding. Machine binding is quicker and some find it easier. Whichever method you choose, I hope you challenge yourself to continue learning and enjoy the process! Quilt Binding by machine is getting increasingly more popular, and is a really great way to bind your quilt! I personally love machine quilt binding for baby quilts that I know will get a bit of wear & tear as it is more sturdy than hand sewing. I also love that using your machine for quilt binding takes just a fraction of the time compared to hand binding a quilt!
