Surviving acid attacks – Neela’s story | Violence against women and girls | ActionAid UK

ActionAid is supporting survivors of acid attacks around the world. Neela was only 14 when her husband threw acid in her face. Here she talks about how she felt, how ActionAid helped her and what she's doing to support other acid attacks survivors. Transcript: My name is Neela. I am 17 soon to be 18. I was sleeping and suddenly I woke up and saw my husband sitting on the bed. I asked him what was the matter. He had been angry with me because my family couldn’t provide a dowry and he wanted to take me abroad and I didn’t want to go. That is why he was angry. So he threw acid at me and ran away. The moment the acid was thrown on me immediately I covered my face with my hands, that’s why my hands are also burnt. It was very painful. I screamed in severe pain. I couldn’t bare it. Hearing my screams people came and took me to the hospital. I was still in pain. I was 14 years old. When the bandages were removed from my face, I couldn’t see what I looked like. Later when I saw myself, I screamed. Who did this? How did it happen? I screamed so much. It took 6 months for my wounds to heal. When I came back home from the hospital, I met Nahar, then I developed a mentality of: Why should I cry? I can do anything When they visit me, they see if I’m OK, they see if I I have enough support or if I have any problems with my studies. They always talk to my parents and support them because they are victims of this accident too and need mental support. This network helps rehabilitate the victims of acid attacks and make them more self-reliant. We don’t want to be dependent on anybody and the network supports us with the mental support for that. Since joining this network, I have become mentally stronger, and I’m motivated to do many things. Read more about our work helping survivors of acid attacks: https://bit.ly/2q3JtOJ
