Late La'l Begum & Late Rustam Baig: Hunza State & exiled Religious Scholar Ghulam Ali Shah[in Wakhi]

Late La’l Begum daughter of Ghulam Ali Shah and Late Rustam Baig son of Muhammad Sanah were conjugal partners and belonged to Gulmit, an important and old settlement of Hunza district of Gilgit-Baltistan Region in the Northern Pakistan. Both of the couple spent their lives for decades together and passed away when they were in their 80 plus. During the period of Hunza State, Late Ghulam Ali Shah son of Nazar Ali Shah of Gircha (Upper Hunza)is said to have a marvelous and someone non-conformist personality. He was a well-known religious scholar of his time and has also served as a Chief of his village termed as Arbob. He quitted Hunza State in the 1950s and opted on self-exile in Gilgit and later on is said to have migrated to the Afghan Badakhshan. However, no trace is found about him as some informants say he had got married in Afghanistan and passed away there. Some would inform that he had tracked back and settled in Chitral. No one knows for sure so far. In this interview in Wakhi, Aafiyat Nazar tries to get information about late Ghulam Ali Shah from his daughter late La’l Begum and his son-in-law late Rustam Baig. The discussion is so interesting and information could be acquired in bits and pieces as both the informants are also not sure to trace him out. In the second part, Aafiyat nazar also tries to get information on the socioeconomic nd political situations of Hunza State including the revenue generations from the public, the tax system and the like. Thanks to Aafiyat Nazar for this sincere effort to document the memories of senior citizens like the old couple like Late La’l Begum and Late Rustam Baig. I am indebted to him for providing me the videos out of his fieldwork as a volunteer. This is a wonderful contribution to the Wakhi oral history and literature, indeed. I hope the viewers would enjoy the discussion as many important aspects of the life of the people in Hunza have been discussed herein. Please don’t forget to give a like to the senior couple and don’t forget to subscribe this channel, K̃hikwor Adabiyot-e Gulshan (Wakhi Literature Garden) entirely dedicated around its noble mission and goals as could be read in the channel subscription and videos.
