Wide of protesters on motorbikes STORYLINE Riot police fired tear gas and warning shots at protesters near Srinagar in Indian-administered Kashmir on Monday as they tried to march to join a funeral procession in which one person was killed in violence between mourners and paramilitary forces, police said. Clashes erupted on the outskirts of Srinagar as thousands of people started a march from the city to the town of Sopore, where a funeral procession was taking place in defiance of a curfew. A police official said 10 people were injured as government forces intercepted the rally about six miles (10 kilometres) north of Srinagar, with barricades, baton charges, tear gas shells and firing in the air. Intense clashes followed and police had to retreat after protesters retaliated by hurling rocks and damaged police vehicles. A doctor at a Srinagar hospital said two people were brought there with critical injuries. Riot police tried to prevent thousands of people from travelling from neighbouring towns to Sopore, a town about 35 miles (55 kilometres) northwest of Srinagar, to participate in a funeral procession and protests called by separatist groups. Paramilitary forces fired warning shots to disperse the funeral procession in Sopore, killing one person, police said. Police said the mourners were in a procession to bury Bilal Ahmed Wani, 22, who was fatally shot a day earlier during street demonstrations. Residents have accused security forces of fatally shooting three people in Sopore since Friday. Wani was killed on Sunday when paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force opened fire on hundreds of people who took to the streets to protest the killing of two people on Friday. The protesters blamed the soldiers for the killings and police imposed an indefinite curfew after the violence on Friday. Six people were also injured in the protests in and around Sopore at the weekend. There were no other details on the protester who was killed on Monday. Thousands of people also protested in old parts of Srinagar on Monday and authorities closed schools for two days and postponed university examinations. Shops and businesses also were closed and public buses stayed off the roads across much of the Indian portion of Kashmir on Monday.
