She said the laws, which create a new crime of 'stirring up hatred' against some protected characteristics, including transgender identity, could represent 'an end to freedom of speech and belief'. Rishi Sunak appeared to back Rowling, saying in a statement that 'people should not be criminalised for stating simple facts on biology'. But Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf defended the laws.
