The client brought the drive to us after another local shop attempted data recovery. However, they were informed that the issue extended beyond the circuit board, requiring more extensive and serious intervention. Upon initial inspection, we identified a problem with the 5-volt power rail, which was promptly resolved by bypassing it. Despite this fix, the drive failed to initialize properly. Further diagnostics revealed that the EEPROM content belonged to a different hard drive. Fortunately, we successfully retrieved all donor units involved in previous recovery attempts, locating the original ROM chip. When the field hard drive was paired with the original ROM and a functioning printed circuit board, it initially spun up but eventually produced clicking sounds. Clicking after the bar search indicated potential damage to the preamplifier attached to the head assembly. A damaged preamplifier obstructs data access. To regain access to the data, we needed to replace the field head assembly to which the preamplifier is affixed. The condition of the preamplifier can be verified using a multimeter. By switching the multimeter to resistance mode and checking the pins leading to the preamp, it's possible to determine if the preamp is faulty. In our case, the readings from the field drive differed from those of the properly functioning drive. Data recovery became feasible once we replaced the head assembly with a compatible donor unit featuring a matching preamp.
