While the baby was napping, I whipped up a crunchy rendition of Marcus Martin's Jenny Ran Away in the Mud in the Night played up to speed and then slowly (He actually calls it Jenny Run Away in the Mud in the Night). Anyway, I've always dug his touch on the fiddle (and banjo), and especially like the way he plays this tune. I guess this one is an early aughts fav. But his version is pretty different from how it's usually played these days, even though he's the source for it. His playing is fascinating and worth studying. His bowing is much more crunchy and sawy and less swoopy and slurry than most contemporary renditions of this one. Also his intonation is rad. I'm sure I'm missing some details and only halfway getting the intonation, but I wanted to share this in case folks were interested. Go listen to him. tuned roughly D# A# D# A# ish In other news, I'll be releasing a new recording with fiddle, banjo, and songs this fall. It'll be special.
