Douglas Daly Butterfly Gorge Year 2 Episode 25 Travelling Australia

Douglas Daly 208km from Darwin. We stayed at Douglas Daly Tourist Park $120 for 3 nights 2 Adults or it’s $25pp p/n power & water, $20pp p/n unpowered. Things we did - Butterfly Gorge it’s a long slow drive in with the last section needing a high clearance vehicle to get through some creek crossings & deep ruts. We arrived at the car park with noodles ready for a swim, only to find a note written on the information sign from the ranger saying “closed for swimming” so that can only mean 1 thing 🐊. It’s a short flat easy 15 minute walk along the creek with a water crossing to get to the 1st gorge, so with the thought of a crocodile in the area it was a very quick run across the creek which at the deepest section came up to my waist 😳 Anyhoo we made it across unscathed and arrived at a beautiful big pool surrounded by the colourful rocky gorge. Even without the “no swimming” recommendation I think the water level is currently too low to get up the other side to go between the gorge walls through to the next gorge. It was still beautiful to see the first of the 3 gorge area’s and we did see about 20 Butterflies 🦋 Arches These are amazing rock formations within the Douglas River. Access the Arches is through the private property of the Douglas Daly Tourist Park. This would also be a beautiful place to swim but unfortunately a freshly baited Croc trap 🐊🪤 sits proudly on the sandy beach entrance to the water. We also stumbled across the huge local resident Olive Python 🐍 sunning himself on the rocks. Twin Pools Beautiful, mostly shallow pool’s & cascades along the Douglas River. Access is also via the Douglas Daly Tourist Park and would be a beautiful place to swim but we wasn’t prepared to take the risk with a crocodile trap further down river at the Arches, also another not far up river at the bridge out the front of the Tourist Park, also unfortunately there was a deceased 1.5 metre fresh crocodile in the creek & there is usually only 1 thing that will kill them, a bigger saltwater crocodile 🐊 We did do really well catching some big Cherubim from here using velvet soap & chook pellets 🦐 Oolloo Crossing To get to this crossing drive right to the end of Oolloo Road FYI Do Not Cross the crossing it’s long gone & so is the access out the other side. A very popular local fishing & camping spot with a man made rock pool on the edge of the river to cool off in, the water is getting low now being later in the dry season so the pool has become green & slimy. We didn’t have any luck fishing but we did catch some Cherubim here. Crystal Falls What a beautiful spot along the Douglas River not far from where the Douglas & Daly river meet, amazing rock pool’s & cascades have formed making this a beautiful oasis in the middle of nowhere. There is a small campground here, bookings via the NT National Park website. To get here - drive to the Douglas Daly community, turn right just before the front gate into the community follow the road, past the watermelon fields until you come to a closed gate (leave it how you found it) go through the gate & turn left (very sandy corner) follow the road to the end & turn right, the first turn left along this road is Tipperary Crossing, the second is Crystal falls, after a few k’s along this road you will come across a turn right, this is Crystal Falls, if you continue forward this will bring you to the mouth of the Douglas & Daly Rivers, it’s a steep walk down to the water here but we gave it a go fishing but no glory here. Back to Crystal Falls, plenty of people were cooling off in the pools which have a reasonable amount of visibility to the deeper waters (absolutely no judgment here) but we chose to give swimming a miss after seeing a saltwater crocodile in the middle of the river only 100 metres away from the pools while we was fishing. Tipperary Crossing Access to the crossing is the first turn right before Crystal Falls. There is a very small campground here and a small area on the rivers edge to fish from. Crossing the river is onto private property of Tipperary Station. Douglas Hot Springs Unfortunately permanently closed by the traditional owners with a locked gate.
