Neon in Daylight for Pierrot Ensemble (2022) Composed by Thomas Little // Recorded by Ensemble Court-circuit Many years ago, I heard a segment on NPR about the poetry of Frank O’Hara, which included a reading of his poem “A Step Away From Them,” and all I could think of was the phrase “neon in daylight,” thinking ever since that it could be a great name for a piece. When composing this piece, I went to O’Hara and his Lunch Poems and tried to capture their wandering aimlessness through 1950s New York City, without resorting to explicit quotations or allusions to any particular musical idiom. I’d like to thank composer Robert Carl for his helpful advice during the composition of this work.
