Combining the personal and the political, they examine their eventful lives and the lessons and learnings along the way. Former diplomat and politician, Mani Shankar Aiyar’s Memoirs of a Maverick: The First Fifty Years and its sequel, The Rajiv I Knew, are candid, thoughtful and witty recountals of his life in the foreign service and in politics. Author, columnist and former CEO of Procter & Gamble, Gurucharan Das’s recently published Another Sort of Freedom: A Memoir is a moving story that takes us through the twists and turns of his life from the chaos of Partition to failed first loves and unconventional career decisions. In this engrossing session, they speak with Mandira Nayar about their lives and read from their books. Mani Shankar Aiyar served 26 years in the Indian Foreign Service, including a deputation to the Office of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Thrice elected to the Lower House of Parliament from Tamil Nadu, he also served a six-year term in the Upper House. In 2006, he was conferred the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award. A cabinet minister from 2004 to 2009, he held various portfolios. He has published nine books to date, including his latest, Memoirs of a Maverick. The companion volume to his memoirs, The Rajiv I Knew, was published and launched in January 2024. Gurcharan Das is the author of the trilogy: The Difficulty of Being Good; India Unbound; and Kama, the Riddle of Desire. He has also written a novel, A Fine Family, and an anthology, Three Plays. He studied philosophy at Harvard and was CEO of Procter & Gamble India before becoming a full-time writer. He is general editor of Penguin’s 14 volume Story of Indian Business. His memoir, Another Sort of Freedom, has just been published by Penguin. Mandira Nayar has been a journalist for over two decades and is currently the Deputy Bureau Chief at The Week magazine in Delhi. She writes on books, history, culture, and foreign affairs. She has previously worked with The Hindu and The Telegraph. She is a Charles Wallace scholar.
