Episode 34 | Friends of King Alfred Buses - The Original King Alfred Running Day | 06/05/24

Some of the participating FoKAB’s home fleet and a majority of the participating visiting vehicles from a range of different operators during the bus rally held on the first Bank Holiday Monday in May 2024, which is also known as the Early May Bank Holiday, with the footage being taken at East Winchester Park & Ride in St Catherine’s, Winchester Broadway and Winchester Guildhall. NOTES: There should have been 16 former King Alfred Motor Services (KAMS) vehicles that are currently owned by the Friends of King Alfred Buses (FoKAB) attending this event, however the list was shortened to 14 vehicles running as JAA 708, a rare Leyland Olympic HR40 built in 1950 that became Hampshire’s first underfloor-engine bus was tragically destroyed by fire at a storage unit on Staddlestones Farm in Penton Mewsey near Andover overnight from Thursday 7th to the morning of Friday 8th December 2023 and 326 CAA, a Bedford SB3 with a Harrington Crusader C41F body built in 1961 failed its pre-operation test the day before this event took place. The replacement for JAA 708 was UMP 227, a visiting underfloor AEC Regent IV prototype bus in the London Transport livery built in 1949 came from the London Bus Museum whilst CCG 704C, a Bedford VAL 14 built in 1965 that was formerly operated by King Alfred Motor Services (KAMS) and is currently owned by Friends of King Alfred Buses (FoKAB) replaced 326 CAA. PUF 647 (547), a visiting Guy Arab IV built in 1956 that was formerly operated by Southdown Motor Services and PWS 492S (2098), a visiting Leyland Leopard with a Plaxton Paramount C45F body built in 1977 that was formerly operated by Badgerline were used to provide 2 different feeder services, with the Guy Arab running a feeder service from Bishops Waltham in which the service was ran by The Provincial Society on route number 69 and the Leyland Leopard running a feeder service from Bristol on service A. CCF 648, a former Mervyn’s Coaches Bedford OB with a Duple Vista body built in 1949 should have been running trips from Winchester Broadway to East Stratton, however this coach broke down as it failed to start on it’s first trip to East Stratton and was replaced by 741 UKL, a Volvo B7RLE with a Plaxton Centro bodywork built in 2007 and is currently operated by Mervyn’s Coaches. This bus was originally registered as CN57 EFD. GLJ 748D (1540), a former Hants & Dorset Bristol Lodekka FLF6G built in 1966 should have attended this event and ran trips from the East Winchester Park & Ride in St Catherine’s to Colden Common, however this bus did not turn up due to unknown reasons and was replaced by M957 VWY (814), a former Reading Buses MAN 11.190 with an Optare Vecta bodywork built in 1995.
