Two member, Britain and Switzerland abstained. The US was the sole security council member to vote against the resolution to allow membership for Palestine. Because the US has veto powers, Palestine will not be allowed to join the United Nations as a permanent member. Israel thanked the US for its veto, and criticised the other members for voting in favour of Palestinian membership.
