What is a Bulb, Corm, Tuber, Rhizome, Tuberous Roots: Confused? Not anymore!

What is a Bulb, Corm, Tuber, Rhizome, Tuberous Roots: Confused? Not anymore! The word bulb to a plant person can means so many things. It's used as a generic catch all term . Gardeners use the word "bulb" to refer to any plant that stores energy for its seasonal dormancy cycle in an underground storage organ. Basically, saving food for winter! Only certain plants have true bulbs and it is a minefield of miss-information if you search online. What growers call bulbs can more technically be divided into five categories: true bulbs, corms, tubers, rhizomes, and tuberous roots. As this is predominantly an Aroid channel this video looks at what all this means in botanical terms and then looks at how it relates to Aroids in general. No matter what kind of storage organ the plant has, all serve the same general function. They store food to carry the plants through dormancy and to get them started the following growing season. True dormancy does not exist in bulbs. Although little or no external growth is visible, a bulb continues to develop internally. In tulips, for example, flower buds form during dormancy. In Aroids like Amorphophallus and Sauromatum a new petiole, the thing that holds the leaf ,or peduncle, the thing that holds the inflorescence, is prepared ready for the next active period. Dormancy is usually brought on by external factors such as cold weather or a change in how wet or dry the environment is. As growers we can encourage dormancy by withholding water or digging up and storing the bulb. Watch the video to continue the learning. References: RHS https://www.rhs.org.uk/?gclid=EAIaIQo...
