Exploring Snow Canyon State Park in southern Utah should be on everyone's bucket list. Located just outside of St. George, Snow Canyon is a place of breathtaking beauty and stark contrasts. The main activity at Snow Canyon is hiking and exploring. There are 38 miles of trails that crisscross the park, although venturing off the trail can be fun to get different vantage points. There is also three miles of paved trails for bikes, as well as fifteen miles of equestrian trails. Another popular activity in Snow Canyon State Park is rock climbing. December through May are the most popular months to visit Snow Canyon. In peak summer, you could have the place all to yourself, but it gets really hot. Visitation ranges from under 20,000 in the low months (August) to over 100,000 during peak months (April). While sandstone is the most commonly seen layer of rock in the park, its appearance is not uniform in either color or texture. The color of the sandstone correlates to the amount of iron oxide contained within. Time, erosion and other forces have weathered the sandstone in different ways, making their appearance anywhere from smooth, to increasingly fractured with patterns that resemble alligator skin.
