Wide of Domingo, zoom in STORYLINE: The operatic tenor Placido Domingo paid tribute on Thursday to his old friend and rival Luciano Pavarotti, who died of pancreatic cancer, aged 71. He said that they were the best of friends and the best of rivals for 40 years, and said their rivalry made them both better men and better tenors. Domingo is director of the Los Angeles Opera and was in the middle of rehearsals for the season's opening weekend when he heard that Pavarotti had died in his hometown of Modena, Italy. "I think the career of Luciano was bigger because I was there as the friendly rival." he said, "And I think my career has been bigger because he was there, also as a friendly rival." Domingo said he spoke regularly with Pavarotti during the past year as he battled against pancreatic cancer. Domingo said Pavarotti was cheerful, vibrant and productive to the end. The last time they talked was about eight days ago, when Pavarotti told him he wanted to produce a religious album for Christmas. They made plans to see each other the following month and there was no final goodbye. "Let's remember the beauty of his voice, the great career that he had, and the friend that we all have lost," Domingo said.
