|| SHRI SHRI SUBASHINI AKHYAN ||| The Legend of Goddess Gandheshwari | Soumya's Devotional

The mother-worshipping Bengalee has several festivals throughout the year, and most of them involve worshipping the Divine Mother, be it the monthly Shasthi Puja, the annual Lakshmi Puja, Manasa worship throughout the month of Shravan, or Kali Puja on Amavasya nights. Since ancient times, the seed of Shakti worship has been ingrained in every pore of the Bengali race. Similarly, on the full moon night of the month of Baisakh, the mercantile community of Bengal worships the Goddess Gandheswari, the presiding deity of all fragrances like sandalwood. It was due to her grace that the fragrance traders of Bengal once gained immense fame and prosperity across the world. But who is this Goddess Gandheswari? And why is she worshipped by the trading community specifically on the full moon night of Baisakh? To find answers to these questions, we must first look at the legend of the Goddess as described in the Puranas. According to the legend, once upon a time the demon couple Shubhuti and Tapti were blessed by Lord Shiva with a supremely powerful son who conquered the three worlds. Due to the foul odor emanating from his body at birth, he came to be known as Durgandhasur. Later, when Shubhuti tried to abduct a Vaishya girl named Surupa, he was defeated and humiliated by the Vaishyas. Unable to bear this insult to his father, Durgandhasur vowed to annihilate the entire Vaishya community. He had one of the Vaishyas named Suvarnabat killed by his army. Suvarnabat's pregnant wife Chandrabhati fled to the forest to save her child and gave birth to a daughter who was a portion of Mother Earth herself, before dying. The sage Kashyap found the girl and raised her as his own daughter, naming her Gandhavati. Years later, when Gandhavati attained youth, Kashyap revealed her background. Desiring to destroy the demon who killed her father, Gandhavati engaged in severe penance to please the Great Illusion (Mahamaya). One day, the demon Durgandhasur heard about Gandhavati's beauty from Narada and came to her hermitage with the intention of abducting her. However, failing to break her meditation, when he tried to strike her with his mace, a golden flame emerged from Gandhavati's body and merged back into her. Then, in her self-radiant four-armed form as the lioness-riding Goddess, Mahamaya appeared and slew Durgandhasur on Baisakh Purnima, casting his dead body into the ocean which became the island of fragrances (Gandhadwip). The Gods then worshipped this form of the Goddess who had destroyed the foul-smelling demon and she became known as Gandheswari. Since then, the Vaishya community, especially the fragrance traders, have been worshipping Goddess Gandheswari on the full moon day of Baisakh. Goddess Gandheswari is generally worshipped through the meditation and mantras of Mahadurga. However, she embodies the principles of Bhudevi, Mahadurga and Bagalamukhi. According to the Shri Krama system, among the sub-Mahavidyas of Bagalamukhi, Gandheswari is recognized as Suvasini Bagalamukhi described as "peetambara trailokyam" (the golden-robed Goddess of the three worlds), as follows: "I take refuge in She who is seated on the great lion (Vishnu's form), the destroyer of the demon Gandhaka, who holds the lotus, conch, bow and trident in her hands, who is golden-complexioned and three-eyed - the fragrant Goddess Suvasini." In other words, the demon-slaying Goddess Bagalamukhi, who was pleased by Lord Vishnu's worship and protected this world from the fearsome storm called Vatkshobha, incarnated as Gandheswari to protect her devotees, the Vaishya community. #NobopotrikayeDebiboron #নবপত্রিকায়দেবীবরণ #ZeeBangla #ZeeBanglaMahalaya2023 #ZEE5 #Mahalaya2k23 #Mahalaya2023 #AnkitaMallick #mahalaya2023 #durgapuja2023 #mahalaya #devotional #spirituality #mythology #shivshakti #bhakti #hindu #hinduism #durga #maadurga #mahalaya #starjalshamahalaya #zeebanglamahalaya #colorsbanglamahalaya #agomoni #yachandi #birendrakrishnabhadra #pankajkumarmallik #jagodurga #durgadurgatinashini #joymadurga #matarani #shaktirupeno #yadevi #mahishasuramardini #pujo #pujo2023 #mahalaya2023 #kolkata #bong #kolkatarpujo #songs #viral #trending #kumortuli #sharodiya #agomoni #starjalshamahalaya2023 #zeebanglamahalaya2023 #koelmallik #ankitamallik #yadevisarvabhuteshu #debiboron #mahalaya2024 #loksabhaelection2024 #election #modi #cyclone #cycloneremal
