HMS RODNEY IN COMBAT WITH BISMARCK

The horrific nature of battleship versus battleship combat at close quarters was revealed during the 27 May 1941 fight between HMS Rodney and Bismarck. It was one of the most famous clashes at sea in the Second World War. That is conveyed here via the recollections of HMS Rodney officer Yves Dias. He had a ring-side seat for the action on the bridge of the British battleship and was able to use high-powered optics to see the effect of his ship's shell hits on the German vessel. Yves was filmed some years ago during a special project by Iain Ballantyne and cameraman Stuart Antrobus. It provided unique eyewitness testimony from British veterans that featured in the TV documentary 'Bismarck: 24 Hours to Doom', based on the Iain Ballantyne book of the same name. Transcripts of the Royal Navy veterans filmed accounts formed the basis of that work, which is now available in a paperback and digital edition from publishers Canelo Books.
