Tuluni in Delhi | A short documentary on the festival of the Sumi Naga | Avitoli G Zhimo

Sumi is a Scheduled Tribe from Nagaland, a frontier state in the North Eastern part of India. As per the 2011 census, the Sumi population is estimated around 336,000, making them the second largest tribe in Nagaland. The Sumi (erstwhile Sema) were first documented by the British administrator cum anthropologist J.H.Hutton in 1921. Currently, there are around 500 Sumi here in Delhi who have come for education and employment opportunities. These are students enrolled in central universities and working professionals in the service of the country - bureaucrats, advocates, professors, doctors, engineers, corporate executives, armed forces etc. Despite being far away from home, the Sumi meet every year to celebrate their Tuluni festival, reminding each other of the importance of heritage, kinship, and reconciliation.
