Introduction & Practice: Addition Strategies

Welcome to our "Introduction & Practice: Addition Strategies" video! In this session, we'll explore different methods for solving addition problems effectively. Let's dive in and enhance our addition skills together! 🔍 What Do You Already Know? Reflect on everything you already know about addition. What Is Addition? Addition is combining two or more numbers to get a larger number called the sum. For example, 23 + 30 = 53. Addition Strategies: The Jump Strategy: In the Jump Strategy, you start with the larger number and jump forward along a number line in smaller increments to add the other number. Example: 36 + 23 = 59 using jumps of 10 and 3. The Split Strategy: In the Split Strategy, break each number into its place value parts and add them together. Example: 73 + 26 = 99 by splitting into tens and ones. The Compensation Strategy: In the Compensation Strategy, adjust one number to a friendly number (usually ending in 0) and balance the equation by adjusting the other number accordingly. Example: 19 + 36 = 55 by converting to 20 + 35. Practice Problems: Try solving these addition problems using the strategies discussed: 66 + 25 = ? 84 + 43 = ? 47 + 51 = ? Was this your answer? Check your solutions and see if you used a different set of jumps or adjustments. Questions?
