Sanjay Dutt on falling, failing and redeeming, with Shoma Chaudhury at Algebra The Arts and Ideas Club on 20 November 2016 Sanjay Dutt, a badass with a soft heart as he’d call himself, talks about his childhood, family, initiation into drugs, his rehabilitation, alleged involvement in the underworld, legal battles and coming out clean. While recounting his experience on and getting off of drugs, Dutt said that there was nothing in the medical book that he hadn’t tried. He recalls that he could almost feel himself dying. Thanking his family for being a constant support, he reveals a promise he made to himself; that of never being high on any substance and that he’ll learn to be high on life, work and family. Dutt also opens about how solitary confinement and a legal battle under the TADA impacted him and his family and how these experiences have become major fault-lines in his life. “Solitary confinement was an attempt to break me,” he said, “…..but I didn’t break.” Religion is very important to him but does not define his choices; he’ll eat beef if he wants to, he says.
