Gibson Mastertone TB-3 (disassembled) -- 1926? 1927?

The mystery is that the FON (Factory Order Number) is 8278-8 (twice on resonator, stamped in rim) which aligns to 1926 -BUT- it has a 40 hole archtop tone ring which I think was not released until later 1927. The unverified family story is that it was bought in 1925 (or 26) when the person was in college. They graduated January 1928 after supposedly playing the banjo dixieland style at school.
