Where Do We Fit? | Jess Fong | TEDxAsburyPark

Being Asian-American in this country can be a conflicting experience because one is caught in the middle of many different social dynamics: between mainstream American vs. one’s own traditional Chinese roots, layered with socio-political values that lead one way or the other. Jess explores how she has felt caught between two value systems and coming to terms with the fact that her story is confusing, difficult, and perhaps controversial. Jess believes that by talking about the hard-hitting issues head-on, people can move forward and have a better understanding of their own identity. Jess was born in the US and lived with her grandparents in China until she returned to the US at age four. She received bilingual Mandarin-English education and attended Johns Hopkins University, where she studied International Studies and Economics. Since high school, she has been active in the local Asian community, teaching classes and giving talks on education, bridging cultural gaps, and parent-child relationships, drawing from her experience as a child of immigrants and a student in NJ public schools.
