Session 4 - Sex Hormones and Glaucoma - TGF's 28th Annual Scientific Think Tank

The Glaucoma Foundation Annual Think Tank convenes experts, from diverse fields, and from across the country and around the world, to share their insights and chart the course for future research that will lead to better treatments on our way to a cure. SESSION 4: Sex Hormones and Glaucoma, Moderator, Rachel Lee, MD MPH 0:00 Introduction - Rachel Lee, MD MPH 00:00:15 The Role of Sex Hormones in the Pathogenesis of Open-Angle Glaucoma: Evidence from Epidemiological Studies – Thasarat Vajaranant, MD, MHA 00:27:54 Estrogen Signaling Pathways in Glaucoma – Yutao Liu, PhD 00:49:58 The Biomechanical Argument that Estrogen Plays a Role in Glaucoma – Andrew Feola, PhD 01:10:10 Audience Questions Rachel Lee, MD MPH is an assistant professor of ophthalmology at the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai. She obtained her Bachelor’s of Science degree at Yale College, her Medical Degree at Stanford School of Medicine, and Master’s of Public Health in Biostatistics at Columbia University. She completed her ophthalmology residency at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary of Mount Sinai and her glaucoma fellowship at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami. Thasarat Vajaranant, MD, MHA is an accomplished physician-scientist, educator, and advocate for global eyecare. With over a decade of recognition as one of Castle Connelly America’s Top Doctors, she is dedicated to improving patient care and advancing the field of ophthalmology. Dr. Vajaranant’s expertise lies in managing complex cases of glaucoma and cataracts. Her research, generously funded by the NIH, NEI, and the American Glaucoma Society, focuses on critical areas such as glaucoma epidemiology, optic nerve and brain aging, and women’s eye health. Additionally, she served as a site principal investigator for various recent multi-center clinical trials investigating novel treatments for glaucoma. Dr. Vajaranant’s passion for ophthalmology is evident in her commitment to patient care, research, and education. She consistently strives to positively impact the field, pushing the boundaries of knowledge and innovation to improve the lives of those affected by eye conditions. Yutao Liu, PhD is a human molecular geneticist in glaucoma and keratoconus with expertise in high-throughput DNA and RNA sequencing, functional genomics, and bioinformatics analysis. He is also interested in determining the role of extracellular vesicles and their miRNA and protein contents in the pathogenesis of primary open-angle glaucoma and exfoliation glaucoma. Andrew Feola, PhD aims to combine his training in hormones, biomechanics, and computational modeling with in vivo tools of visual assessments, electroretinograms, and optic nerve head imaging to address ongoing research questions. Currently, his main goal is to understand how menopause, or estrogen, modulates the risk for developing glaucoma using various animal models. He is specifically interested in how menopause affects visual function and biomechanical properties of the eye. These projects also investigate hormones (e.g., estrogen) are neuroprotective against the progression of visual impairment in glaucoma and potentially their benefit in various ocular diseases.
