If the magic cast on the skin was a curse, then the person wearing it could hardly remove the skin of their own. That of humans-turned-animals by wearing their pelt is an ancient myth, that goes as far back as the Viking age, where “úlfhéðinn” (“wolf-pelt”) was one of the names by which berserkers were called. - “So I could drink my brother’s blood”: this line lets on that the protagonist’s stepmother was pregnant. This is yet another element coming from Scandinavian folklore. According to it, the only way for a werewolf to heal from his - werewolves were usually males - condition was to kill a pregnant woman and eat the fetus she carried. The original ballad clearly extended this creed to humans-turned-wolves, though they are not technically werewolves.
