Leopold Stokowski - A Legendary 20th Century Maestro

This programme is being uploaded on 13 September 2022 to mark the 45th Anniversary of Leopold Stokowski's death at the age of 95 on this date in 1977. He was a great and sometimes controversial conductor who was both a noted transcriber and a constant champion of new music. He appeared in several films, presented countless 'first performances,' was an early experimenter in stereo recordings and was still conducting in his 90's. In this survey from 2002, one of several BBC TV 'Legends' programmes, he is seen in interview excerpts and conducting music by Schubert, Debussy, Wagner and Enesco. The programme is introduced by Andrew McGregor, presenter of BBC Radio 3's 'Record Review.'
