Autumnal Castle: 5043 On The Shakespeare Express

After the usual successful season of running on summer Sundays, a bit of autumnal atmosphere was on the cards for the finale of Vintage Trains' 'Shakespeare Express' runs between Birmingham and Stratford-Upon-Avon, operating on the penultimate Sunday of October. Doing the honours for this last run of the year was GWR 'Castle Class' No.5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe'. A welcome choice, for me, as I hadn't filmed her solo yet since she returned to steam earlier this year, following a major overhaul. In this short video, we see the two forward facing runs of the day from Stratford-Upon Avon, starting out at Wilmcote Station, where the Earl is captured steadily cresting the summit of the 1 in 75 climb up Wilmcote Bank, before gently accelerating away through the station and on towards Bearley Junction. Later on, we see the second and final run of the day bowling along on the approach to Dorridge Station. There was a brief moment where my heart sank as the regular was closed, thanks to some adverse signals, but it was quickly remedied as the signals changed to green and the driver reapplied the power to continue the symphony of Castle thunder.
