Museums are Innovation Hubs for Technology Inspired by Nature | Christin Murphy | TEDxNewport

Behind the dusty dioramas and drawers of dried birds in New York's American Museum of Natural History, Dr. Christin Murphy gazes into the viewing window of a Computed Tomography (CT) scanner. Sometimes called a CAT scan, the whirring machine is normally used in medicine to make detailed 3-D images of internal organs. Dr. Murphy isn’t looking at a human patient though, her subject is the whisker of an elephant seal. This is the future of museum-based research. “Nature provides solutions for a limitless amount of problems. Our biggest roadblock is accessing the right information,” says Dr. Murphy. She works for the Navy in Newport, at the forefront of bioinspired research, the process of looking to nature for design innovation. “The potential for bioinspired innovation coming out of museums is really made possible by the digital revolution. It completely capsized the way that people view museums, as dusty halls full of jars of dead things, to these animated high-tech digital models that are coming alive again." Researchers draw design solutions from nature for everything from bullet trains and windmills, to sonar and Velcro. But, science has been limited to a handful of specimens for research. What if there is a way to compare all of the designs that nature has to offer" “Museums have done all the work of cataloging life already. People should look at museums as a specimen library,” says Dr. Murphy. “The advent of digitization technology lets us scan whole swaths of museum collections, many of which are extinct, to get these 3-D digital models which we’ve never been able to explore in depth before.” Dr. Murphy’s TEDx Newport talk, “Museums are Innovation Hubs for Technology Inspired by Nature,” previews how technology is facilitating new research from old collections. “TEDx is the kind of place where you can have a conversation about these big ideas mid-progress,” she admits. “It’s not something that scientists are used to, but I think that’s the beauty of TED. Those things are welcome on stage.” Scientist, Innovator This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
