A example of a stud shoe or structural plumbing guard. These are required at non bearing stud walls that are drilled greater than 60 percent of the stud width. If you place two studs together you may drill up to 60 percent of the stud in a bearing wall. As long as the hole is centered in the stud and the stud has at least 5/8” of material on each side a stud shoe is not required. This application has exceeded the code, because the wall is non bearing. A nail guard would only be recommended for this application.
