He was in Germany before I arrived doing promotion for the movie release of his first novel The Last Exit to Brooklyn. Our first show was in Munich. He went out there and introduced himself and started right in. The first line he hit them with was "Georgette was a hip queer" from The Queen Is Dead, a story found in Last Exit. From that moment on the audience was his until he said good night and walked off an hour later. I had no idea of the impact he had on people in Europe. He was recognized in the streets constantly. People turned up every night with his books in translation to get them signed. He was on television every few days. It was really something to see. Every night was pretty much the same. Every night he read with great energy and intensity and every night he brought the house down. It was such a blast travelling with Cubby for weeks. Onme day we were driving through the Alps and we pulled over to look at a lake. I said that the mountain looked beautiful reflected in the lake's surface. He cracked that it was a bunch of rocks, he'd take a city any day. Straight out of Brooklyn indeed. Every morning we'd have brekfast together and talk. It was some of the best times I can remember. Much of the material on this CD has never been released in any other form. I picked these particular selections because they made up the main body of what he was reading on this tour. He didn't return to much of this material after the tour was over. So what you get is an hour with one of the mightiest American writers who ever stepped up to the plate. All recoreded in high quality stereo. Sounds like a good deal to me. -- H Rollins None of this would have happened if it weren't for Henry: he arranged the tour, invited me to join him, made the recordings and everything that followed. I am truly grateful for everything that you have done for me Henry. I love you dearly. -- Hubert Selby Tracks 1-5 recorded March 5, 1989 Linz, Austria / Tracks 6 & 7 recorded March 7, 1989 Dortmund, Germany / Tracks 8 & 9 recorded March 11, 1989 Hamburg, Germany
