A Timeline of the 1990s Heavyweight Boxing Division (Boxing Documentary)

A Timeline of the 1990s Heavyweight Boxing Division (Boxing Documentary) Best boxing video on YouTube Best 1990s Boxing Video on YouTube Chronology of the SILVER AGE (originally posted 10/19/2021) A Chronology of the SILVER AGE! Perhaps it is the greatest decade for heavyweight boxing ever. As I said with the 70s, even if you don't think this is the best era, I hope this timeline convinces you at the very least that it is top tier and, likewise, a landmark in sports history. In fact, the division (and sport as a whole) has FAILED to recapture the magic and intrigue it held during this era. Let's get caught up: remember that the 1970s was the GOLDEN AGE and that the 1980s suffered as the middle child in the wake of the greatness that was the 70s. The 1990s returned the marquee division to primetime. IRON Mike Tyson emerged from the once Larry Holmes dominated 1980s as the man atop the mountain who was expected to reign supreme over the 1990s. His very first fight of the decade against James BUSTER Douglas would alter the trajectory of the division in the same way that Tate/Weaver did 10 years earlier. Evander Holyfield, having ascended from the undisputed cruiserweight crown, awaited his shot at Iron Mike. As did Donovan RAZOR Ruddock; the 1988 olympians (Riddick Bowe, Lennox Lewis, and Ray Mercer) entered the sport looking to leave their mark and become undisputed champion. Michael Moorer ascended to heavyweight looking to pull his own "Michael JINX Spinks". Old lions George Foreman and Larry Holmes would look to reclaim their former glory, showing age is only a number and that the 1970s really was superior. Against the odds, a new "rock/paper/scissors" would form around the controversy of Mike Tyson; Lennox THE LION Lewis, Evander THE REAL DEAL Holyfield, and Riddick BIG DADDY Bowe would form an incomplete rivalry that still haunts us as fans today (made all the worse by how many times Bowe/Lewis was derailed). Remember how the period of 1973 to 1976 could be considered the best ever in heavyweight history? The stretch from 1991 to 1997 may just eclipse it with all of the drama, politics, and excitement that ensued amongst the titans of the time. 1999 would answer the ultimate question we'd had since the end of 1992, a question I won't spoil. The 1990s would turn out to be a fusion of the perfection that was the 70s and the hindsight benefitting confusion that was the 80s. Welcome to yet another time where heavyweight boxing ruled the world, firmly in the limelight of the pop culture fueled 1990s. It's the era of various, great champions; long live the SILVER AGE! The following is a list of just SOME of the legendary battles that took place in the decade: 1991: "The Tyson/Ruddock duology" Mike Tyson vs Donovan RAZOR Ruddock 1991: "THE BATTLE OF THE AGES": Evander Holyfield vs George Foreman 1992-1995: "The Holyfield/Bowe trilogy" (the CENTRAL NEXUS POINT of the decade): Riddick Bowe vs Evander Holyfield 1993: "THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN": Lennox Lewis vs Frank Bruno 1994: "ONE FOR THE AGES": Michael Moorer vs George Foreman 1996-1997: "The Tyson/Holyfield duology" (includes the BITE FIGHT): Mike Tyson vs Evander Holyfield 1999: "The Holyfield/Lewis duology" (the QUEST for the true heavyweight champion): Lennox Lewis vs Evander Holyfield Part 2 of the trilogy! Parts 1 and 3 linked below! Article: https://www.boxing247.com/boxing-news... Thank you to all who were patient and to all who have provided timeless boxing content to the web for share. This one's for y'all. And, yes, I will be doing other decades: 50s, 60s, 70s, 00s, and 10s.
