New B&W 705 Signature is a fantastic standmount speaker (and one of my absolute favorites). But, can it compete in terms of sound with the Queen of bookshelf speakers, the world-class (and double priced) 805 D3? Let’s find out! *Use of reference-grade headphones/monitor-speakers is recommended. To better evaluate , focus your audition on micro and macrodynamics differences between the two speakers. Associated equipment: Musical Fidelity M6scd Cd player Luxman C-700u Preamplifier Luxman M-700u Power Amplifier Ortofon Reference Speaker Cables & Audioquest Interconnects. Volume on Luxman C-700u preamplifier is set to -26dB for both speakers. According to the Manufacturer, sensitivity is rated 88dB spl (2,83Vrms/1m) for both. Audio is captured via custom-modified Rode xy microphones at a normal listening distance (about 3 meters) in order to record speakers interaction with the room and not only direct emission. (in my experience this technique gives a better sense of speakers sound than a nearfield sound capture) Room is moderately reflective, like a typical modern livingroom with furnitures.
