A statement from filmmaker Anant Singh on the passing of veteran actress Mary Twala reads in part... I am profoundly saddened by the passing of Mary Twala at the age of 80. In an illustrious career as an actress spanning more than five decades, she played many roles in which she made her own. I was privileged to have worked with her on two iconic South African films, SARAFINA! and MANDELA: LONG WALK TO FREEDOM in both of which she played memorable roles. It goes on to say Mary Twala is a role model and mentored many aspiring actors. The South African film and television industry is poorer after her loss. We have lost a giant of the industry.
