My Hutu neighbors, swept up in the chaos, turned on Tutsis in our village, subjecting us to brutal beatings. Fearing for my life, I made a desperate escape to another town where my uncle resided. The journey to my uncle’s house was very risky, and I had to hide in the bushes to avoid danger from the Interahamwe militia who were chasing Tutsis. At one point, the Interahamwe found me in bushes and a few others who were also hiding there. Among us was a Hutu friend of mine, a well known bus driver, who had fled with me because he opposed the violence. When the militia discovered us, he quickly claimed that I was crazy, convincing them not to harm me. This inspired me to pretend to be insane since I was not known in that village, and the people there believed it. I kept going until I reached my uncle’s house, feeling so relieved to see my aunt there too. But our happiness was mixed with worry about staying safe. I told my family that I’d be pretending to be crazy and wouldn’t hide, so they shouldn’t act like they knew me. I realized I had to act crazy to stay alive, so I started doing strange things. I searched through garbage for food and talked nonsense. I even smeared myself with cow dung to keep up the act. Once, a soldier came to where I was, aiming his gun at me, ready to shoot. I acted even more crazy, doing silly things to distract him. Finally, he looked at me and said, “This guy’s mad. I’d be cursed if I killed him.” Amidst the chaos of my act, whispers of hope started to spread. People in the village, thinking I was mad, would talk openly about the Inkotanyi forces’ arrival, sharing news and information as if I couldn’t understand. When I finally heard confirmation of Inkotanyi’s advance, a wave of optimism washed over me. True to their word, the Inkotanyi swiftly reached our town, bringing with them the promise of freedom. They found me at my uncle’s house, still pretending to be the village fool. And in that moment, I was rescued from the grip of madness and despair by their arrival- Survivor, Rwamagana, Eastern Province.
