The town has a relatively small population of 20,000 and is the third smallest state capital in the USA. However, this teeny town is full of great things to do, from historically significant sites and wilderness parks to music events and beer festivals. If you’re a lover of the great outdoors and find yourself wondering about things to do in Augusta, Maine, don’t worry. You’ll be spoiled for choice in this vibrant city and surrounding countryside. The highly accessible Greeneway Trail runs right through the town, following an old railway along the river and through woodland. If you’re an avid tree hugger, head to Viles Arboretum. It’s home to over twenty collections featuring trees from all over the world. And a little further afield, you can hike, mountain bike, ski, or snowshoe your way through Brook Bond Recreation Area. If you’re into American history and architecture, Augusta won’t let you down either. The Fort Western Living History Museum is the country’s oldest surviving French and Indian War garrison and dates from 1754, while the Maine State House was built by America’s first practicing architect Charles Bulfinch in 1832. Be sure to book a trip to the Colburn House State Historic Site, which is the spot from which Benedict Arnold launched his 1775 Quebec expedition. Depending on when you visit, there are lots of things to do in Augusta, Maine for sports, music, and food lovers, too.
