In this video from the Berklee Online graduate-level course, Songs Unmasked: Techniques and Tips for Songwriting Success, instructor Ben Camp points out how the ubiquitous AABA song form—a.k.a. The 32-bar song form, which includes classics like “Will You Love Me Tomorrow,” “All I Have to Do Is Dream,” and “Great Balls of Fire”—was nearly nonexistent in the beginning of the twentieth century. Now this form makes up nearly 70 percent of popular songs. Camp analyzes how this song form spawned other song forms that wouldn’t have otherwise existed. Song forms aren’t just fast fashion though: They’re also form with function! When looking at sections of songs, Camp encourages you to analyze your own songwriting and the songwriting of other artists and ask the following questions: What type of musical and lyrical section is happening?; How does the section compare to the other sections around it?; How many sections are there?
