Males and females are similar, and the birds can be recognized by the fact that they often wag their tails.The song is a series of unannounced, low-key tones that are often mixed up with a few simple trills.The spotted flycatcher feeds on insects that it snaps in the air.The nest of the flycatcher is placed on some kind of shelf or up against a tree trunk. The nest consists of plant material held together by cobwebs and lined with hair and feathers. It can nest in bird boxes with large openings, and in residential areas often on buildings.The spotted flycatcher lays 4–5 eggs that are pale bluish with reddish-brown spots. They are incubated by both sexes, but mainly by the female, for 12–14 days. The chicks stay in the nest for 12–15 days before flying out.The spotted flycatcher is distributed throughout Europe, eastwards to Central Asia and southwards to North Africa. In Norway, it is a common breeding bird over most of the country, but more rare in Northern Norway. It likes to live on forest edges, clearings, parks and gardens. According to the Norwegian Ornithological Society, the population counts between 350,000 and 600,000 pairs.The spotted flycatcher is a migratory bird, which winters in tropical Africa.
