Weaver is known for his work in establishing the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and The Blue Ridge Parkway. Zebulon Baird Vance Sr. - the gentleman whose name I saw markers for throughout older Asheville. He served in The House up to the beginning of the Civil War. He then served as governor of North Carolina for 2 years during war. His service in the Confederate Army led to his imprisonment in Washington D.C. upon The South's surrender. During Reconstruction, Zebulon served in The Senate until his death in 1894. His funeral services were held in the Senate Chambers. George Adams Shuford - WW1 veteran than attained the rank of first lieutenant. He served as a NC House Representative from 1945 - 1947, and followed that position by serving as a State Superior Court Judge. He was then elected as a Democrat to U.S. House of Representatives where he served for 6 years. During his tenure, he was a signatory on the Southern Manifesto, opposing school desegregation in The South. Robert Rice Reynolds - Democratic U.S. Senator from North Carolina that served 1932 - 1945. During his tenure, he chaired the Senate Committee on Military Affairs. He supported Roosevelt's 'New Deal', taxing the wealthy, economic regulations, social security, and the Fair Labor Standards Act. Jeter Connelly Pritchard - Served as a Republican U.S. Senator to replace Zebulon B Vance. Following his service, he became a justice of the Supreme Court of the District of Columbia. Richmond Mumford Pearson - Served in the NC House, and later two terms in the U.S. House of Representatives as a Republican. He then became an ambassador to Persia, Greece, and Montenegro. Thomas Dillard Johnston - served in both The House and Senate of North Carolina. Was elected Mayor of Asheville during Reconstruction. Served as a Democrat in the U.S. House until 1889. James Madison Gudger Jr. - Served as a Democrat on the U.S. House of Representatives. Allen Turner Davidson - Colonel in the NC State Militia in 1840. With the start of the Civil War, Davidson was chosen as a member of the North Carolina Secession Convention, and the Provisional Congress of the Confederacy. He was then elected to the first House of Representatives of The Confederate Congress. Locke Craig - Democrat that served as NC Governor and as a representative in NC Congress. Under his tenure, a highway commission was formed; conservation policies enacted, state park system was improved, and fishing regulations were approved. Thomas Lanier Clingman - "Prince Of Politicians". Served as a Whig in the NC Senate. Then became a Democrat in the U.S. House and then as a U.S. Senator. During the Civil War, he refused to resign his seat and was ejected from Congress in absentia. He then served the Confederacy as a Brigadier General. John Brown - Served in the Pennsylvania House, and then as a Jackson Republican in the U.S. House. James Jefferson Britt - Served in the NC Senate, and was later elected as a Republican to the U.S. House ousting Zebulon Weaver, only to be replaced by him in the following term. George Howard "Buck" Redfern - Major League Baseball Player, making his debut in 1928 as a utility infielder for the Chicago White Sox. Lamar Stringfield - U.S. Composer whose works were based on American Folklore. He founded the NC Symphony in Chapel Hill, and then worked as an associate conductor at Radio City Music Hall. Appalachian folk music remained his passion throughout his life, and in 1929, published a book of arrangements with Bascom Lamar Lunsford.
